Another month older

 - by McCall

So Stephe and his friends always complain about mom blogs where people just post pictures of their kids and give a travel log of what they’ve been doing, but I’m going to do it anyway. Soon I will be saving this blog for posting things other than family stuff and will be blogging at thecannons.info for all things baby related. Until then…
blessing

Colin was blessed on September 6th. It was really neat and so much fun to have family and friends there with us. After the blessing we had a fun picnic in the coolest park in Orem (maybe in all of UT county). A huge thank you to my mom and sisters for all their help with the food for the party after and to Stephe’s family for the desert.

Time Flys- One Month Old!

I have lots to say and I’d love to write some of the commentary that has been going on on in my head over the last month, but typing with one hand while holding a baby is tricky. So instead I am going to post some pictures and a longer post will have to wait!

I love when he looks at me like this!

But, normally this is the look he gives me.

More coming soon…

We are getting the hang of things around here and I can’t tell you how great it is to have so much help from friends and family. Not a day goes by that I don’t talk to my mom or one of my sisters to ask them “how do I…” or “is it normal if…”

A Baby Story

 - by McCall

At 41.5 weeks pregnant I was starting to think that I would be pregnant forever- not that I minded too much since I had such an easy pregnancy and I was still feeling pretty comfortable. But I knew that I was under a dead line since the mid-wives wouldn’t let me go over 42 weeks without inducing me. Stephe and I went on long walks and hikes hoping to move things along, and tried several different old wives tales hoping that I would go into labor on my own. We even bought Castor oil but I chickened out.

My family has a history of going way over their due date (we might be part elephant) and everything has turned out fine- my sister says “we are just slow cookers.” However, family history or not, the medical field has to worry about liability and malpractice issues and therefore they were pretty strict on having me come in no later than 42 weeks. So, at my last doctor appointment we made plans to be induced since no real progress was being made on my own.

On Sunday, July 19th Stephe and I checked into American Fork Hospital at 8:00 p.m. (Stephe, by the way, missed the Tool concert that he’d had tickets to for months because we both assumed that we would have a baby by then).  The first step was to give me Cervidil because when I was admitted I was only dilated to a 0.5. Throughout the night I began having some contractions and things were starting to kick into gear. At 8:00 a.m. Monday morning I was given Pitocin to give me stronger more regular contractions.  Even though I had to be monitored the whole time, I was able to do so mostly on portable machines so we took advantage of this and walked the halls a few times and I sat on a birthing ball- both things helped take the edge off.

Time line of the next few hours (brought to you by Stephe and his twitter updates since I had no concept of time until the end):

10:30 a.m – Dilated to 2.5 cm with contractions every minute and needing a lot of counter pressure on my back during each contraction.

1:00 p.m.- Dilated to 4cm and they let me get off the Pitocin which meant no more continuous monitoring and time to get in the tub. I loved being in the hot water- it really helped with the pain.

2:45 p.m.-  Out of the tub and 5.5 cm. The midwife stripped the membranes. She told us our son definately has 2 ears.

3:30 p.m.- Back in the tub for a bit until my temperature got too high and they made me get out. I went back to the bed and Stephe and the Midwife did lots of pushing on my lower back.

5:30 p.m.- Back into the tub and I think I’m in transition and really moving along quickly… I’m not.  Contractions are intense and I’m not getting any break between them. I couldn’t talk or react to anyone around me. When I was able to get checked again I was only at 6 cm and felt defeated.

7:45 p.m.- No changes are really happening so there is talk of what to do to move things along.

8:30 p.m.- Midwife accidentally breaks my water while checking me and there is meconuim in the waters. She also realizes that part of the problem is that he is turned in a funny position- head down but facing the side. I’m still at a 6 so she can’t turn him. I get up on my hands and knees and move my hips to get him to turn.

10:00 p.m- 10 cm! Back on Pitocin to get stronger contractions to help me push.

10:30 p.m.- Pushing

11:00 p.m.- Pushing

11:30 p.m.- Still pushing- making progress but then baby’s heart rate makes a quick drop and they turn off the Pitocin. They put me on internal monitors and oxygen. I’m starting to freak out a lot!

12:00 a.m.- Still pushing but without the Pitocin. My contractions are soo weak that they aren’t helping me and I am running out of steam.

12:30 a.m.- The Midwife calls in the on-call Doctor (Dr. Allen). He makes the assessment that the baby needs to get out quick and that it doesn’t look like I can do it on my own. He goes and gets his team to do a forceps delivery.

12:45 a.m.- Dr. pulls hard with the forceps while I push and nothing happens… He says “give her a local antithetic for an episiotomy.” I yell at him “I don’t want an episiotomy!!!” He explains that if I don’t I will tear really bad and I tell him I will slow down, not push, let things stretch on their own. He says we need to get the baby out now and trust him.

1:11 a.m.- Beautiful, beautiful, baby born. He had a bit of a rough start- APGAR score of only a 2, but after 5 minutes and some help from the nurses he bounced back and had a score of 8.  Stephe went with him when they took him to clean him up and I had to stay and get everything finished up. I just wanted my baby! After hour they finally came back and I can’t even describe…

40 Weeks

 - by McCall

Monday marked 40 weeks of pregnancy. I am ready to have this baby, but I am trying to be patient. I am trying to keep my thoughts on how nice it is to sleep and spend time with Stephe without needing to feed and change a baby every few minutes. Yesterday we went up to the Cannon family cabin for their annual family reunion and hiked around for a few hours– I hoped this would put me into labor but no luck.

Here is what I hope to be one of the last pictures of me pregnant. Any guesses on when he’ll get here? How much he’ll weigh? I’ll figure out some amazing prize for whoever is the closest!

One of the things that I find weird is when total strangers ask me what I am naming my baby. It seems a little pointless– I will likely never see this person again and it feels a little like an invasion of my privacy (maybe I’m weird). I always reply with “we are still trying to narrow it down.”

On the name topic- from strangers and neighbors to friends and family people think that giving their opinion on why they don’t like the name you have decided on is welcome. If I need help with naming my child I promise I will ask.

Just needed to vent- thanks.

35 Weeks

 - by McCall

I just noticed that my last post was when I was 25 weeks pregnant, that was 10 weeks ago! I am now 35 weeks pregnant and relize that I need to do a better job of keeping up this blog. I can’t believe that I am due in 5 weeks. So, somewhere between 3-7 weeks I will have a baby and try my luck at parenting.

I have had a really smooth pregnancy, and honestly I have really enjoyed being pregnant. When I am around other pregnant women who are having a much harder pregnancy I feel like I need to make up things to complain about just so I don’t seem like I’m rubbing it in that I feel so good. I do feel more tired, my back hurts and my ankles just started to get swollen after a long day, but all in all pregnancy has been fascinating to me and really exciting.

Here is a picture of me and my growing belly last week in San Diego when Stephe and I went out to California for his cousin’s wedding.

25 Weeks

 - by McCall

Last week was all about babies for me (to be honest every week is all about babies for me lately, but this week was extra baby filled). Lani, one of my best friends had her baby boy on Wednesday. Lani and I have been friends literally since birth and were roommates in college for over 4 years– we are as close to being sisters as you can be with someone unrelated. I am so proud of her getting through a long labor and C-section. My new little “nephew” Connor is darling. I am pretty sure he and my baby will be best friends.

Then over the weekend we took off to Denver to see Stephe’s god-daughter Izebelle and be there for her blessing. She is a doll! It was great to see Marty and Jill again too. Also thanks to the Garfield family for letting stay at there house and for taking care of us.

Here is a picture of my belly at 25 weeks. I have been feeling the baby move a lot more and sometimes can even see him movinng in there. I have really enjoyed pregnancy and have felt great, but it seems like it’s going to last forever!

Last Friday we had our 20 week Ultrasound. We went back and forth on if we would find out the gender of our baby or not, but in the end I decided to find out. The one twist we put on it was to not find out during the Ultrasound, but to have the doctor put the results in an envelope. Then we invited our families and friends to a party where we opened it.

First of all I have to say that the Ultrasound was an incredible experience. The baby was moving like crazy and I couldn’t feel a thing! They had a hard time getting the gender because of how much it was squirming! The baby looks good and healthy. I was amazed by the whole experience.
